What is green web hosting?
Green web hosting refers to hosting services that use renewable energy sources or take other measures to minimise environmental impact.
Will buying our services save the planet?
No…
Web hosting is hugely energy-intensive, and achieving perfect sustainability takes a lot of work.
While our services lead to many efficiencies for the human good, we do not pretend there is some higher purpose other than providing an awesome service for a fair price and minimising our impact on the planet.
So are you energy efficient?
Energy is expensive, and our margins are low, so we are acutely aware and minimise our consumption for maximum performance efficiency from our energy use.
Do you use green energy?
We don’t like that “
green” word; it’s not completely truthful (see REGO certificates, carbon credit trading and, for example, the environmental costs of solar panel production).
We do prominently use renewable energy sources:
- Our offices are verifiably using 100% renewable energy suppliers.
- Our physical data centre partners are verifiably using 100% renewable energy suppliers.
- Some other cloud services and third parties are less verifiable about their energy sources.
Do you plant trees?
Would you like to pay us more so we can greenwash the trees someone promised us they’d grow but almost certainly asked someone else to grow for them? Did we chop down trees to make way for those new trees? Were native species used? Do we have the skills and time to properly check? Do we add efficiency or value?
We think it’s more efficient and greener to remove the intermediaries, charge you less, encourage you to
plant your own trees or pay someone directly to
plant one for you.
