Nominet introduces new Mitek ID checks

Nominet, the official registry for .uk domain names has partnered with Mitek, an identity verification company to enhance the security and integrity of .uk domain registrations.

Who are Mitek?

Mitek are a leading provider of identity verification solutions, trusted by organisations worldwide such as banks and payment providers, for their advanced technology and robust security measures. Their expertise ensures that the verification process is efficient and secure, promising to delete copies of any ID documents once the verification process is complete.

What does this mean for you?

As part of this new process you may need to verify your identity through Mitek after registering a .uk domain name. Nominet has not made it clear who this will affect however from our understanding this is only required for domains with special requirements, such as .sch.uk or domains Nominet identifies as suspicious, such as domains used for phishing. If Nominet does require verification you will be contacted by Nominet directly and will be given a link to Mitek. You’ll then be taken through a step-by-step process to verify your identity involving completing a liveness check and uploading documentation to prove your address and a photo ID.

Be Aware of Phishing Attempts

While this new verification step helps strengthen the integrity of .uk domains it is important to stay vigilant against phishing attempts and ensuring any verification requests are from Nominet or Mitek. Here are a few tips:

• Verify the source: Always check the sender’s email address and ensure they are from an official Nominet or Mitek email address.
• Look at the links: If you’re asked to click a link in the email make sure it’s also an official Nominet or Mitek URL
• When in doubt, contact us: If you have received a verification request and are unsure of it’s legitimacy we’re always on hand to offer advice.
