In this guide we’re going to run through the steps to connect your domain name to your google site. This guide presumes you’ve already purchased your domain name.
Google side
- Go to Google Sites and sign in with your Google account.
- If you haven’t created a site yet, click on the + button to create a new one. If you already have a site, open it from the list of existing sites.
- Within your Google Site, click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then select Custom domains.
- Click on Start Setup or Use a custom domain.
- When asked about where you purchased your domain, select Another provider and follow the steps.
- Google will provide a TXT record that you need to add to your domain’s DNS settings. This verifies that you own the domain. Take a copy of this.
Verify the domain via DNS
- Head over to the DNS section of your control panel, and create a DNS zone if you don’t have one already.
- Once you’ve setup the DNS zone, you will need to add the TXT record.
- Click Add record.
- Select TXT from the drop down.
- In the Name field enter @.
- Leave the TTL default.
- In the TXT data field enter your unique TXT record provided by Google.
- Click Confirm.
DNS settings for your site
- After verification, you’ll need to update the CNAME record to actually point your domain to Google Sites.
- Click Add record.
- Select CNAME from the drop down.
- In the Name field enter www.
- Leave the TTL default.
- In the CNAME data field enter, ghs.googlehosted.com
- Click Confirm.
Finishing up
- After updating your DNS records, return to Google Sites. Google will check your DNS settings. This process might take some time (up to 48 hours), but it usually happens within a few hours.
- Google automatically provides an SSL certificate for your site, so it will be accessible via HTTPS.
