How to Connect Your Domain to Google Sites

In this guide we’re going to run through the steps to connect your domain name to your google site. This guide presumes you’ve already purchased your domain name.

Google side

  1. Go to Google Sites and sign in with your Google account.
  2. If you haven’t created a site yet, click on the + button to create a new one. If you already have a site, open it from the list of existing sites.
  3. Within your Google Site, click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner, then select Custom domains.
  4. Click on Start Setup or Use a custom domain.
  5. When asked about where you purchased your domain, select Another provider and follow the steps.
  6. Google will provide a TXT record that you need to add to your domain’s DNS settings. This verifies that you own the domain. Take a copy of this.

Verify the domain via DNS

  1. Head over to the DNS section of your control panel, and create a DNS zone if you don’t have one already.
  2. Once you’ve setup the DNS zone, you will need to add the TXT record.
    1. Click Add record.
    2. Select TXT from the drop down.
    3. In the Name field enter @.
    4. Leave the TTL default.
    5. In the TXT data field enter your unique TXT record provided by Google.
    6. Click Confirm.

DNS settings for your site

  1. After verification, you’ll need to update the CNAME record to actually point your domain to Google Sites.
    1. Click Add record.
    2. Select CNAME from the drop down.
    3. In the Name field enter www.
    4. Leave the TTL default.
    5. In the CNAME data field enter, ghs.googlehosted.com
    6. Click Confirm.

Finishing up

  1. After updating your DNS records, return to Google Sites. Google will check your DNS settings. This process might take some time (up to 48 hours), but it usually happens within a few hours.
  2. Google automatically provides an SSL certificate for your site, so it will be accessible via HTTPS.
