How to choose your domain name

Domain names are designed to make it easier for people to access your website. Keeping them short and simple will help. Here’s a comparison for you. Let’s say you have a company called Travel News Europe Limited and you’re looking to set up a website and brand. You could go with travel-news-europe-limited.com – but this doesn’t really look short or simple! It would be much easier to go with something like tnel.com – It’s short, easy to remember and still represents who you are.

Multiple Top Level Domains

Protecting your brand is paramount when registering your domain. You’ll need to consider registering the domain name on all of the common Top Level Domains (TLDs) such as .com/.net/.org/.eu/.co.uk

Why do I need all of these? – Well, put simply, if you own them, nobody else does! Even if you don’t use them it means that nobody else can register it and potentially damage your brand.

If your website is a personal one, you may also consider to use .me or .me.uk. How cool would it be to have your own personal domain name and email address!

Other things to consider

Depending on your domain name, it’s possible that it could be misspelt so registering these may also increase your visitors. Also think about the plural. Example: thebestwebhost.com and thebestwebhosts.com – On this subject, also think about different ways to say this, like thegreatestwebhost.com and thegreatestwebhosts.com – This will also be good for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). You could even change it up slightly and do something like thebestwebhosting.com – An online thesaurus may help with this, such as Thesaurus.com

Register sooner rather than later!

Even if you don’t have a website yet. You need to register your domain, because if you don’t – Someone else might, and then what will you do? There are no pre-requisites for registering a domain. All it needs to be is available for registration.
