Email headers are a vital part of understanding the journey of an email. They contain detailed information about the email’s sender, recipient, servers involved in its delivery, and other technical details. By examining email headers, you can troubleshoot issues, trace spam, or verify email authenticity.
This guide explains how to locate email headers in various email clients and how to download them.
Gmail
- Open the email you wish to examine.
- Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the email.
- Select Show Original.
- A new tab will open displaying the full email headers and raw message.
- You can use the copy to clipboard or download button for a copy.
Outlook.com
- Open the email in your inbox.
- Click the three horizontal dots at the top of the email (next to Reply and Forward).
- Select View Message Source.
- A new window or tab will display the email headers.
Yahoo Mail
- Open the email you want to investigate.
- Click the three horizontal dots next to Reply.
- Choose View Raw Message.
- The email headers will appear in a separate tab or window.
Apple Mail
- Open the email in iCloud Mail.
- Click the gear icon in the bottom left corner.
- Select Show Long Headers from the menu.
- The headers will appear above the email content.
Roundcube
- Open the email from which you want to get the headers.
- Click the More button and select view source. The full headers will then display in a new window/tab
- Select all and copy the contents to your clipboard.
Microsoft Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- Open the email in question.
- Go to the File tab (Windows) or click the Message menu (Mac).
- Select Properties (Windows) or View Source (Mac).
- Look for the section labelled Internet Headers. You may need to scroll down.
Apple Mail (MacOS)
- Open the email in Apple Mail.
- Click View in the menu bar.
- Select Message, All Headers or Raw Source.
- The headers will appear in the email viewing pane.
Mozilla Thunderbird
- Open the email you want to investigate.
- Click More in the top right corner.
- Choose View Source.
- The headers will be displayed in a new window.
